Une lettre de protestation signée par 300 professionnels de la santé mentale a été publiée dans la presse écrite et les éditions en ligne du journal londonien The Independent.

Nous, psychothérapeutes, chercheurs et autres professionnels de la santé mentale, écrivons pour exprimer notre consternation face à la décision de la Société de recherche en psychothérapie (SPR) de tenir sa prochaine conférence internationale à Jérusalem.

La politique d’Israël dans les territoires occupés, avec les démolitions de maisons, les restrictions de mouvement et les emprisonnements sans procès, provoquent l’insécurité, le désespoir, l’impuissance et humiliation. Ces pratiques créent des tensions dans les familles et dans le développement affectif des enfants, et produisent des traumatismes à grande échelle. L’impact désastreux de l’occupation israélienne sur la santé psychologique des Palestiniens est parfaitement documenté.

Cette conférence aurait lieu à quelques pas des quartiers où les Palestiniens sont actuellement dépossédés de leurs maisons pour laisser la place à des colonies israéliennes, l’une des nombreuses stratégies qui constituent une menace pour leur survie à Jérusalem. Le déni collectif de la SPR - ou son indifférence - est évident dans la publicité affichée sur leur site pour la conférence. Jérusalem est ici présentée comme « « une ville suspendue entre ciel et terre, l’Est et l’Ouest, le passé et le présent - des univers parallèles de caftans et cafés branchés. »

Nous sommes choqués que dans leur réponse aux préoccupations déjà soulevées, les organisateurs estiment qu’il est suffisant de promettre d’aider les chercheurs palestiniens en psychothérapie à participer à la Conférence. Cela peut soulager les consciences de la SPR, mais ce n’est rien comparé au message politique qu’ils enverront en organisant cette rencontre dans cette ville assiégée.

Le nom de la SPR devrait être synonyme d’honnêteté intellectuelle, d’indépendance et de volonté courageuse de faire face à la vérité. Par conséquent, nous lançons un appel pour que la conférence soit déplacée dans un autre lieu, suivant l’exemple donné par l’Association mondiale pour la santé mentale des nourrissons, dans des circonstances similaires.
